Congratulations! You have your own little team of Pokemon and you are ready to face the world and start your very own adventure. Before you just go dashing out of your mom's house in search of the next Pokemon to catch or the newest gym leader to beat, there are some things you should really know about living with your Pokemon!

..::: Leveling Up Your Pokemon

This is one of the easiest things to do here in PKMNNation. There is no pressure to level your Pokemon and you can go at your own pace. This is very relaxing for those who hate the word 'deadline.' As for leveling up your Pokemon there is plenty of ways to do that! We have ways to level up Pokemon with not only art, but with words as well.

Leveling Up With Art

**Please note, any drawn piece with a single pokemon gaining more than 60 levels must be submitted to the Mass Levels folder. Mass leveling does not apply towards Mission or Move learning as those have a specific directive. Please refer to the Mass Leveling section here for more details!

..::: Drawings

Sketch = +1 Level
    :pointr: Must be full body and in color. Cannot use levels from Shading.
    :pointr: BGs for sketches will only count for 1 level.
    :pointr: CANNOT be used for:
- Clutches
- Move learning
- Events/Missions
- Evolutions
- Reference Sheets

Headshot/Partial = +1 Level
Chibi = +1 Level
Full Body = +2 Levels
    :pointr: Must show 70% or more of the Pokemon to count for Full Body levels.

Shading = +2 Levels
    :pointr: Must be noticeable to count for Shading levels.

BG = +2 Level

..::: Animations

Hand Drawn Animations will reflect on the above guidelines but for each "unique" NEW frame. This is for hand drawn animations that you had to redraw each frame.
Ex: You create an animation of a Weedle wiggling. It is 5 frames. 2 are reused. It would count as 3 Full Body frames, with shading [(2+2)*3 = 12 Levels]. *Keep in mind that if the redrawn frames move very little, it will count as partial levels instead!*

If you use a background that does not change, but is panned through, it will still only count as 2 levels . However, if you change the background to a new image you may add another 2 levels.

The great thing about animations is that they will always receive bonus levels depending on the type.

Simple Animation (Blinking, Twitching, etc) = +2 Levels
Complex Animation (Running, Walking, etc) = +4 Levels

As an example on how this works, say you draw your Pokemon and want to spice it up with a little animation. They are a normal full body with shading and BG, but you decided to make them blink. You would receive levels for Full Body, Shading, BG and Simple Animation for blinking; (2+2+2+2 = +8 Levels).

..::: Pixel Icons

Pixel icons will also reflect on the above guidelines for drawing and animation, but will have some restrictions based on size and detail.

For example, for a pixel icon to count as a full body, the detail would need to be noticeable for the Pokemon like so:

The following sprites would be an example of chibi:

bulbasaur     charmander     squirtle

As long as the shading is seen for both types of icons, you will receive shading levels!

Important Note: You will only receive levels for drawings if they are 100% drawn by you. That means no tracing, no bases and no heavy referencing. This is not allowed in the group.

..::: Mass Leveling

Mass Leveling is a system that was started due to the popularity of drawing a single Pokémon many times! While encouraged, it can get a bit confusing counting up all of those levels. This is to help keep the count honest.

Mass Leveling starts after a single Pokémon in a single submission that primarily focuses on gaining levels has reached 60+ levels.
     :pointr: There is a cap of 300 levels per Pokémon in a single submission.
     :pointr: Must be submitted to the group to count for levels.
     :pointr: Must not relate to Mission or Move Learning.

The Pokémon being drawn must have its reference sheet linked in the artist description, as well as accepted into the group.

Due to the nature of comics gaining mass levels quicker than other submissions, they are an exception to these rules.

All levels must have a full breakdown and a list of where they are being EXP Shared to. A reference sheet link to said receiving Pokémon must be included as well.

Mass Leveling submissions may not include Move Learning, as that would require a separate folder. Any Move learning submission has a cap of 100 levels

Leveling Up With Words

If drawing isn't your favorite thing to do, maybe you'd rather sit down and write a story instead. We have a leveling system for writers too!

200 Word Piece = +1 Level
400 Word Piece= +2 Levels
600 Word Piece= +3 Levels
800 Word Piece= +4 Levels
1000 Word Piece= +5 Levels

For each additional 200 words, you will receive +1 Level.

**Please note, there is a limit of 12,000 words per written submission (60 levels), unless submitted to the Mass Levels folder.**

**Please note, a single written submission must be a single, continuous story.  Multiple submissions may be used to cover multiple stories.**

If you are a member that likes to Roleplay with other members or do collaborative pieces, the total word count of the collaborative/RP piece will be shared between you both. For example: if you write a 1000 word piece together, both your Pokemon included in the story will receive +5 levels for the piece.

Written pieces must make sense to the Pokemon being included for the Pokemon to gain levels. You must write more than "So-and-So was taking a nap on the rug," for that particular Pokemon to receive levels.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Here in PKMNation, we know how wonderful it is to give gifts to others! It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside knowing you made someone happy with a surprise. So we have decided to give back to those that give to others if they choose to take it. When you give someone a gift, you have the choice to receive a +2 level bonus to any one Pokemon that you personally own.

Bonus levels may be claimed for each Pokemon drawn within the image that is a gift!
Ex: You draw friend A's, Friend B's, and one of your own Pokemon interacting in an image. You can claim +4 bonus levels to your Pokemon in the image or to another Pokemon you own.
Gift art much be exactly that-- A gift. No payment art or battle art and such will count towards these two additional levels!

Though that is not all there is for experience! We all have those times we pour our heart and soul into a picture or a piece of literature and sometimes we would love to have that seen. Here at PKMNation you have the chance to gain extra experience with the approval of a mod. If a mod feels your work shows exemplary effort, we have the right to reward you with added levels. It's always nice to get something back from all your hard work.

Though we do ask you do not hassle the mods just because you may think you deserve extra levels. We will be the judges of who gets what. Let's not spoil the sweetness of this.

Power Up With A Great Move

Teaching your Pokemon moves is a great way to bond together and become stronger as a team. However, there are some need to know things about teaching your Pokemon some new moves. Let's move on, shall we?

..::: The Need To Know

The only moves Pokemon will know fresh from an egg/trail/clutch, will be their beginning starter moves as listed on [Bulbapedia]. It's a great site that really helps out a lot! Any moves being learned must come from the most recent generations move pool.

Please note that evolving to the next stage does not teach you the next stage's starting moves automatically.

When submitting a move learning piece, we must ask that you link the reference sheet of each Pokemon that is learning a move in the description. It is required for us to be able to double check that the moves you are learning are allowed to be accepted. References of the Pokémon learning the move must be accepted into the group prior to the move learning being accepted.

To teach a Pokemon a move we require two "unique" full body drawings of your Pokemon learning the attack. Using copy pasted artwork is NOT allowed for move learning. Both drawings must look completely different in some form or another. In addition, move teaching must be done in a single submission and not broken into multiple submissions.

Each full body drawing must be related to the move and must show that Pokemon in each picture to count as a move learning image.
    :pointr: It can be your Pokemon testing the move, winding up for the move, or even recovering from the move- a variety of presentations is acceptable, but it must involve the move in some way!
    :pointr:For a move that would normally hide the Pokemon (such as Dig), it will require a minimum of three full bodies depending on how the move is drawn. Remember, as long as 70%+ of the Pokemon is showing, you will be okay!

If art isn't your thing and typing is, no need to worry! To teach a Pokemon a move with literature, we ask that the piece be 400 words per move.Keep in mind that the 400 words MUST make sense to the Pokemon learning and succeeding in learning the move. The whole story doesn't have to be a move learn but a nice chunk must be. That means you can't learn Water Gun with two sentences and then write everything else about your Pokemon loving pickles.

You're welcome to type more than 400 words to get yourself some more levels. 400 is only the minimum requirement~

A Pokemon can only learn moves that are part of their current generation 'level up' and 'TM/HM' list. If you are ever unsure of what your Pokemon should know, please check [Bulbapedia]. This site has everything you may need to know about your Pokemon and lets you know the moves that they have the potential to learn.

If your Pokemon is a Fusion, they can learn any move from their Fusion type through drawing/TM as long as it makes sense to the design and isn't a Legendary Specific move. If you aren't sure if your Pokemon can learn the move, ask a Moderator!

If you aren't in the mood to draw or write to teach your Pokemon a move from their level up pool, you can skip the work by using a Technical Machine! TMs are also used to teach your Pokemon TM/HM moves and can be purchased in PKMNation's [Delibird Market].

If you would like to teach your Pokemon a move that is outside of their allowed move pools, you can use a Jumble Berry. Jumble berries have one rule: the move you are teaching your Pokemon must make sense and cannot be your Pokemon's weakness!

This does not apply to moves in your Pokemon's Breeding (Egg),Tutor, or Event Move pools.This means that Jumble Berries can be used to teach a Pokemon their Breeding (Egg),Tutor, and Event Moves without the Jumble Berry's penalty.

:pointr: Please note, using a Jumble Berry is the only way to learn a move outside of their allowed move pools.

Pokemon can learn their moves regardless of level and can also learn more then the usual four moves. This means your level 10 Charmander can learn Inferno as long as you follow the rules of teaching a move! Your Pokemon can have all their moves that they are taught for the rest of their lives. You never have to worry about what move to get rid of now! It's too hard to have to choose.

Smeargle can learn other moves through the use of Sketch. This means that when learning moves Smeargle's Sketch will work much like a Jumble Berry, and therefore should follow the same basic rules of a Jumble Berry. Sketch will need to be re-learned every time in order to teach it a new move!

Pokémon like Meowstic and Lycanroc can learn moves from both "forms" pool move.
:pointr: Alolan forms cannot learn move sets from the original species forms. If you've used a form candy on them, the Pokemon may retain any moves they had learned from their previous form, but may no longer learn new moves from that pool.

Evolving

Sometimes we have to make a great choice in our life to keep what we know or go for something completely new. At times we have to look at our Pokemon and see if they are ready to evolve and if you are ready for them to evolve as well. This can be a life changing moment for both of you, so always make sure you are ready for this, for once you evolve, you can't go back.

..::: How To Evolve

We require an Image or Written submission (with a preview image included) to be submitted to Every Day Images, and then a form filled out at the Evo Hall & Merch Journal. At least one Full Body of the new form or 400 words (making sense) is needed for an approved evolution.

Some Pokemon do not need a stone to evolve and merely evolve due to reaching a certain level, If you are unsure if your Pokemon evolves with levels, check out Bulbapedia.

In order for an evolution to be accepted via levels, the Pokemon MUST be the appropriate level to evolve prior to the drawn piece. This means that your Level Log must add up to the correct level for the next stage of Evolution.
    :pointr: Please note! If a Pokémon is a Crossbreed and both species require levels to evolve, the one with the higher level requirement is the level that your Crossbreed needs to be in order for the evolution to be confirmed.

Crossbreed Pokémon evolve via Stone Priority followed by highest level, per stage of evolution. Let's look at some examples.
You have a Fennekin/Zubat cross. But how does it evolve? Well, Fennekin evolves into Braixen at level 16 and Zubat evolves into Golbat at level 22. Since the highest level is 22, your crossbreed would then evolve at that level into a Braixen/Golbat. What about the last stage? It looks like Braixen evolves at level 36 but Golbat evolves via Friendship. Since the Golbat side evolves via Friendship, it would require the use of an Evolution Stone. This means that in order to achieve Delphox/Crobat, you would need to use an Evolution Stone instead of levels due to stone priority.

This also means that if you wanted, you could evolve your Pokemon into Delphox/Crobat right after evolving it to Braixen/Golbat at 22!

What if your cross consists of a Pokemon with only one stage while the other in the cross has two or three? Let's explain that too!
You have a pretty awesome looking Skarmory/Deino. Skarmory does not evolve but Deino can evolve two times. Because of this, you would need to use two Upgrade Stones.

But why?

Well, this is because Skarmory cannot evolve via levels nor Evolution Stone. Skarmory is holding your Deino back from evolving and you really want it to be a Skarmory/Hydreigon. To accomplish this feat, you need the two Upgrade Stones to push the evolution through the two stages. One Upgrade Stone for Skarmory/Zweilous and one more Upgrade Stone for Skarmory/Hydreigon.

IMPORTANT: Your Pokemon MUST be the appropriate level to evolve prior to the drawn/written piece. This means that your Level Log must add up to the correct level for the next stage of Evolution. If your Pokemon does not meet the requirements, your evolution receipt will be denied and you will not receive levels for the drawn evolution(s) since your Pokemon could not move onto the next stage(s).

Does your Pokemon need a stone to evolve? There are a couple to choose from, each to suit the type of Pokemon you would like! Here are the stones you can purchase to help evolve your Pokemon:
Evolutionary Stone: A stone that allows any Pokemon that requires something other than leveling to evolve! If your Pokemon requires Friendship, Trading, learning a move, being in a certain location, etc (and doesn't list any levels alongside the requirement) on Bulbapedia, then your Pokemon will require an Evolution Stone.

Upgrade Stone: A stone that allows crossbreed babies to reach final evolution if needed. This can also be used to upgrade one side of a Pokemon if you do not wish to evolve another.

If you would like to make use of these stones, you can purchase them in the [Delibird Market]. You can even find them while adventuring on Trails or by participating in events!

Not sure how your Pokémon evolves? Visit the [Evolution Map] for the group!

When you are ready to evolve your Pokemon, please stop by the [Evo Hall and Merch Usage] journal!

If you have met certain requirements, you can Mega Evolve your Pokemon! If you're interested, check out the [Mega Station]!

Additional Information

For every increment of five levels your Pokemon gains, it receives +1 to their base attack (BA).Be sure to update your Pokemon's reference sheet with this!

All art and stories that include your Pokemon count for levels. This even includes Reference Sheets! Please note that it is your responsibility to make sure the link is provided on the reference sheet that shows where these levels came from. Including EXP Share levels! Keep in mind that if you cannot provide functioning (non-broken) link proof to the levels gained, you will lose the levels from the piece.

When you evolve your Pokemon a stage, it gains a +2 bonus to their base attack (BA). This includes Mega Evolving a Pokemon!

Once your Pokemon evolves, it cannot learn moves from their previous form via level-up. You will need to use a Jumble Berry or TM to teach them any moves from their previous form. So make sure you teach your Pokemon the moves you want prior to evolution!

Pokemon cannot gain moves from evolving or using a species swapper. All moves outside of the first reference submitted to the group's starter moves must be taught by their specific requirements!

As long as you made it yourself, it will count, even if it's just one flat colour (in this case it has to have some shape though, it doesn't really count if you just use the bucket tool to colour the bg blue or whatever in one click). You can't use photos you found online unless you can prove the person who took them allows it, but even then you didn't make the bg, so you wouldn't get the levels.

okay....sooo I have a question. idk If I asked this before buuut...I have Saint Clare who is a Skitty/Zubat child Saint Clare reff's Zubat eveolves via lives while Delcatty evolves with a moonstone I know I would need a evo stone(which I have SO MUCH of thankfully.X'D) but...then to get to crobat, I would need a upgrade stone to get to crobat correct?

Would you be evolving her Pumpkaboo side at all? If yes, then you could do 1 evo stone from Skitty/Zubat/Pumpkaboo to Delcatty/Golbat/Gourgeist, and 1 upgrade stone to evolve the Golbat side so she would become a Delcatty/Crobat/Gourgeist. c: You can do it the other way around as well with the same amount of stones, use 1 upgrade stone first to evolve her into a Skitty/Golbat/Pumpkaboo, and then 1 evo stone to evolve her into a Delcatty/Crobat/Gourgeist.

If you didn't want to evo her Pumpkaboo side at all, you would only be using upgrade stones. First, 2 upgrade stones to evolve her Skitty and Zubat sides so she would evolve into a Delcatty/Golbat/Pumpkaboo, and then 1 more upgrade stone to evolve her into a Delcatty/Crobat/Pumpkaboo.

Hope this helps! With 3-way crosses there are always several paths you can take if the mons have a different amount of evo stages or if there's only one or two sides you wish to evolve. o/

Okay, so when I try to teach a Fusion-Pokémon a move (either with drawing/writing etc.) do I have to use the Jumble Berry as well or not? (Kinda dumb question maybe but just to be sure)

When you draw the moves, you don't have to use any items! :> I can definitely see a Water fusion Deino being able to learn those two moves. Oh and if you didn't want to draw the moves, you would use TMs, not Jumble Berries, as fusions can learn moves of their fusion type either through art or through TM.

Back again ;v;

If I were to draw gift art, specifically two fullbodies and a headshot... Would I get 6 levels for myself, (2+2+2) or does the headshot count for less?

And I assume gift levels are per /pokemon/ not per drawing? So if I were to do two fullbodies of the same pokemon as a gift, it's still only be 2 levels?

I was told that my Trapinch could not learn Toxic through a drawing, and it'd have to be taught via TM. Is this true? I was under the impression that even moves on a pokemon's TM/HM list on the bulbapedia could be taught by drawing... At least that's what reading through this journal lead me to believe.

;v; sometimes I wish i'd ask things like this /before/ I commission for my pokemon to be taught a move, ha...

Hello,

Sorry for any confusion, but HM/TM moves require TMs to be taught, the only moves that can be taught by drawing are Level Up moves or Fusion moves.

Thanks,

hey! would a smeargle filling it's starting sketch move need to have two images like learning a move normally?
and when it learns sketch and fills sketch more in the future, would i need to draw two images of it learning sketch, or could i do one of sketch and one of the move filling the sketch slot?

Hiya saladkink,

Smeargle can learn other moves through the use of Sketch. This means that when learning moves Smeargle's Sketch will work much like a Jumble Berry, and therefore should follow the same basic rules of a Jumble Berry. Sketch will be re-learned every time in order to teach it a new move!

Because Smeargle's starting move is sketch you do not have to draw it learning sketch for the first move. Basically you just draw the move that will replace that initial first slot. To re-teach Smeargle sketch you will need to teach like a normal move to regain the slot. Then you can use it again to teach it a new move. It's a little more work due to the fact you only have to draw move learnings for this pokemon instead of using items.

Thank you,
Luna

I have a few questions that I don't think are answered here, if I may! :)

If I commissioned someone outside of PKMNation to draw my Pokemon, could it still count for levels? Is this what the 'Outsourced Images' folder is for?

I'm using a template for my reference sheets, and from my understanding I can only apply the background levels from it once (which makes sense of course, since I only drew it once). What I'm wondering is, could foreground sort of things count towards background levels? Some examples of what I mean: [PKMNation] [REF] Smaug[PKMNation] [REF] Gold Digger
Could something like a frame count for background levels as well? Something that goes all the way around the Pokemon, but isn't directly behind it. (For example, a wreath, or something similar?)

Thank you! :)

Hey there Tarje! Deepest apologies about the delay on this reply.

Yes, any commissioned/gifted/etc. art from any non-members can still be counted for levels! That is exactly the use for that folder. :>

Foreground drawings can definitely be counted! If it is not a required part of the pokemon and added in for aesthetics, it can most certainly count for a bg.~
The frame would perhaps need more detail like the wreath example, but it could also count. :>

Does move learning have to have a background, and or shading?
Just trying to figure out the minimum amount of levels required for a move learn.

Hey there Pandora!

Nope, background and shading is not required. Just two full body drawings with clean lineart and flat coloring. :>
